Million-dollar green home will educate the public on sustainable strategies

One of the most state-of-the-art and energy efficient homes in the U.S. has been completed in Beverly, Mass., a suburb 20 miles north of Boston. The home is unique in many ways – one being that it is 4,600 square feet, and, also, its builder will be applying for LEED Platinum certification, a rarity for such a large home.
In addition, the home will be unoccupied for at least a year to serve as an educational tool for the general public, home contractors and others who have an interest in learning more about green home construction and modern technologies.
The home, for example, is just one of few nationwide that relies entirely on LED lighting. It was built by Cleantech Homes LLC, an educational organization that specializes in the advancement of high performance and sustainable green building practices. Company founder Michel Reichert, a former venture capitalist, spent more than $1.2 million to build the home, which is open for public tours by appointment.
The home also features a comprehensive energy monitoring system that alerts homeowners to how much energy the house is consuming, and which appliances are using the most energy in real-time. When smart meters like these are installed in a home, owners typically reduce energy consumption by 15 to 20 percent.
