Yolo Colorhouse plans for Earth Day

A plant-the-seed promotion on Facebook will be the key highlight of the Earth Day celebration at Yolo Colorhouse.

The Portland, Ore.-based environmentally responsible paint company is starting a Facebook promotion on April 20 and every seed planted will result in $1 donated to Farmers Ending Hunger, for a maximum of $300. The organization is an Oregon nonprofit that makes healthy food available to local communities.

With more than 27,000 Facebook fans, there is expected to be a solid response to the campaign, said Puji Sherer, creative director for Yolo Colorhouse.

One person who plants a seed as part of the campaign will be randomly selected to receive a room makeover of two gallons of Yolo Colorhouse zero-VOC paint and a set of color fandecks, as well as an online color consultation with a Yolo Colorhouse expert to help them choose colors for their room, she said.

It's a natural fit for Yolo Colorhouse to celebrate Earth Day because the company sells zero VOC paint and even the cans the paint is stored in is made of 80 percent post-recycled plastic. All paint labels and brochures are printed on 100 percent post-consumer recycled material with soy-based inks. And all retail displays are made from formaldehyde-free wheatboard and paintboard.

The list of items the paint does not contain is long: No carcinogens, reproductive toxins, mutagens, hazardous air pollutants, ozone depleting compounds, formaldehyde, phthalates or VOCs. Yolo Colorhouse is Green Seal certified, which means that not only the product is green, but the manufacturing process is, too, with all wash water recycled and the manufacturing facility in Texas even including a rainwater collection system to offset water usage.

Yolo Colorhouse also only contracts with freight companies aligned with Smartway in order to have the greenest delivery of their products with a reduced environmental impact. "We're shipping a heavy product all around the U.S. so we're very aware of our carbon footprint, "she said.
