HGTV Green Home 2012

The HGTV Green Home 2012 is a farmhouse-style structure with earthy stonework, a communal floor plan and plenty of private areas. Architect Steve Kemp talks to HGTV about how he designed the home.

“We start with looking at our region, so we look historically at what was built over a period of time here in the south in Georgia to respond to the hot humid climate. That gave us a great precedent. Also this community is rooted in an agrarian society so farmhouse just seemed to fall right into place,” Kemp said.

The home’s foundation has a rustic appearance due to field stone, and the exterior of the home has siding and cypress that gives a farmhouse flair.

The home is in Serenbe, a 1,000-acre sustainable community near Atlanta. Read Serenbe’s story.

    Hey - that's me at the Green Home 2012 in Serenbe. Serenbe is worth the trip. You can stay at the Farm House and enjoy great local food, relaxing in the Chattahoochie Hill Country. I walked and ran the miles of trails, ate at the Hil Restaurant and the Blue Eyed Daisy, and checked out the community. The high-density residential units have little "town centers" with shops & apartments above. An ambitious project - I hope that it can continue to grow. They've aimed to re-create what I already have in my old neighborhood - walkability, close to shops, restaurants, library, post office, entertainment.     Hi. my son lives ouside of Atlanta and when I visit him later this year I am requesting we go to Serenbe, looks like an incredile place and I would love to win the "Green Home" , not only to be near my son and family but also would love to retire there, "go green".
