In Portland, Maine, Avesta Housing showcased a newest affordable housing project last week, billed as the greenest in Maine. Oak Street Lofts is the first multi-family building in the state to be certified LEED Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council, according to WLBZ2.
The 37 units are nearly forty percent more energy efficient than those in a typical apartment building.
All of the efficiency apartments feature low flow faucets and toilets, non-toxic paint and energy star appliances.
In another first, the building was marketed to the city's artist community.
It features a work space for artists, and the building's lobby serves as a gallery where tenants can showcase their work.
All of the units are leased, but it a small dent in the demand for affordable housing. Avesta says 2,000 families remain on their waiting lists covering Cumberland and York Counties.
