While the International Builders’ Show wasn’t wholly devoted to green products, numerous manufacturers had a compelling green story to tell. From building products designed not to end up in the landfill to shingles that grab pollutants out of the air, green building products took many forms.
Prior to the show, we took a look at a few of the green building products scheduled to be on exhibit. We saw those and more. While we can’t show all of the great green products, here’s a look at a few more products that will help make your next home building project more environmentally friendly.
The PV Solar Shutter by Plug 'n Save Energy Products combines an attractive shutter made from sustainable wood products with solar power panels. The photovoltaic cells grab power from the sun and direct it into the home using grid-tie inverter technology. The inverter plugs into an electrical plug in the home so the solar power is available to any other device connected to the home’s electrical system. The PV Solar Shutter is easy to install and portable.
QMotion motorized shades use only standard batteries to raise and lower shades. The shades can be operated by remote control or manually. The shades, available in opaqueness from five percent to blackout, help control view-through, glare control and solar heat gain.
Delta Faucets introduced its Touch20xt Technology to home bathroom
faucets for a hands-free experience. The technology enables the user to turn the water on by simply approaching the faucet’s sensing field or tapping the faucet anywhere on the spout or handle. The hands-free technology will be available on lavatory faucets from Delta Faucet’s popular Addison and Lahara bath collections.
For homes with a tight envelope, Panasonic’s WhisperComfort Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) provides a balance of exhaust and supply air. It uses two 4-inch ducts, one to exhaust stale air and the other to supply fresh air from outside. Its low-rate, continuous run helps ensure that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemical and biological indoor air pollutants are vented out and replaced with fresh air. This ceiling-mounted unit is easy to install and can be used as a spot ERV or whole-house ERV to comply with Green building IAQ standards.
With vented sidelites from Therma-Tru, homeowners can let light and fresh air into their
homes without sacrificing energy efficiency or style. Vented sidelites offer the ventilation homeowners want without the inconvenience and obstruction of storm doors or sliding screens. Therma-Tru’s vented sidelites are continuous systems comprised of either one-hinged door and two-hinged sidelites, or two-hinged French doors and two-hinged sidelites. Door stile edges and a wide patio mullion provide additional strength when doors are open.
