Version 2 (old version) can only be used on homes permitted before April 1, 2011 and completed before 2012. This required a HERS score of 85 or less for the southern climates and 80 or less for some northern climates. It included a third party inspector (HERS rater) completing two sets of inspections/testing during the construction process. The HERS rater would enter construction details and test data into a software program that determines compliance with Energy Star standards along with the checklist compliance during inspections.

Version 2.5 (current transition version) is a particle change to the newer version (3). It includes a few new construction detail requirements and increased efficiency (lower HERS score) requirements. The required HERS score to pass Energy Star now varies. A house size adjustment has been added. The larger the square footage/bedroom ratio will require a lower HERS score.

Version 3 begins Jan 1, 2012. There are three more checklists required. The HVAC contractor and builder are required to have extra training. For more information, read about the history of Energy Star for new homes and the Energy Star verification process.
