• Selecting tile for your home

I just finished a project where I used the Debris Series tile from one of my favorite responsible manufacturers: Fireclay Tile. Based in San Jose, Calif., the company incorporates 25 percent post-industrial recycled content (granite dust) into its tile. Not only was I able to access an unusual shape of tile for a Spanish Revival home remodel, but the Debris Tile is composed of over 70 percent recycled content, the majority of which is post-consumer waste from glass bottles!

Energy used to produce the Debris Series is 50 percent of other tile manufacturers due to its high recycled content. I had originally looked at a tile with a Moorish arabesque shape that proved to be prohibitively costly. Not only is the Fireclay tile less expensive by quite a lot, but it is extremely durable because the tile is tired at over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Visit the Fireclay website to view the Ogee shape that I used and the Star and Cross pattern, another classic Spanish pattern. You must click on the "Field Tiles" heading in order to view the many shapes available. Check out the Cuerda Seca handpainted tiles as well for Spanish style homes.

Fireclay makes amazing tile! Not many manufacturers left in the US like them. If you like this, check out my tile project here: http://buildipedia.com/at-home/bathrooms/how-to-tile-a-custom-bathroom. I used tile from a local manufacturer, Seneca Handmold (www.senecahandmold.com) - they use natural, local clay to make tile that doesn't have to travel far. Thanks for the post on this important topic!
