How can I increase efficiency in my home's lighting?

Want to help the environment, and save electrical energy and cost? By relying less on the strained power grid of your own city, you can do so! A few procedures will help you, the homeowner, to increase lighting efficiency.

Natural lighting

Natural lighting is your best friend! Remove those curtains (consider installing blinds instead), and let daylight filter through, nearly reducing your dependence on artificial lighting. Consider the installation of skylights for large areas without windows

Bulb and fixture choice

CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Light) are more energy efficient than incandescent lighting. CFL produce less heat and produce more light per watt than incandescent lighting Select fixtures which can accept CFLs. LED (Light-emitting diode) lighting is also energy efficient due of its long-lasting qualities.

Gain control

Install dimmers so you can set the brightness and intensity, therefore saving more energy. Sensors also work to activate light through motion or sound, having lights turn on only when necessary.

Think passive

Light-colored reflective floor and wall surfaces increase interior illumination. Both natural and artificial lighting are reflected, reducing amount of fixtures and lights needed.

I like 12 volt LED strip lights for retrofits. Any ideas?
