If you are like many of us, you are baking in this sweltering summer heat. It is taking a toll on us and really putting a strain on our current HVAC systems. If your old system goes kaput and you decide now is the time to finally invest in a high-performance geothermal system, where does one start? Here are five tips to help you find the right geothermal contractor:

  1. You are ahead of the game if you already have a maintenance agreement with a well-established, professional HVAC contractor. This is vital to increase the life and function of your existing equipment, but also allows a relationship to develop built on performance and trust.
  2. If you know someone that has a geothermal heat pump system, ask about their experiences with the installing contractor. Were they completely happy, or are there things they wish had been done differently. Friends in the local construction trades can almost always recommend quality HVAC contractors.
  3. Do your research. Check out respected sites on the internet that give information and ratings of geothermal brands, models and installing contractors in your area. Look at contractors web sites - how long have they been in business? What professional organizations do they belong to. Don't forget the Better Business Bureau and Angie's List, etc.
  4. When you have narrowed your search, set up appointments with the contractor's Professional HVAC Consultant at your home. Are they knowledgeable, professional and informative? They should explain the entire installation process, the characteristics and types of geothermal systems and explain the value of available options, rebates and tax credits. These consultants are a huge reflection of the contractor. Is it a positive one?
  5. You have done your research and chosen a contractor that checks out in every way. You have met and feel comfortable with their HVAC consultant. Now is the time to take a moment and ask yourself if there are any unanswered questions or concerns. If the answer is no, you have done your due diligence and should confidently call your selected contractor and sign the agreement.

Before you know it, you will be enjoying the comfort, quiet and savings of a geothermal heat pump system!
