New Verizon Home Monitoring and Control Service makes your home green and smart

You’ve driven a few miles from home and wonder if you locked the front door or turned off the lights. Verizon may have the answer with its new Home Monitoring and Control Service.
The service, now in the trial phase, will enable customers to lock doors remotely, see what’s going on inside the home via networked cameras and set and adjust lights, smart thermostats and appliances. Remote control is offered through smart phones, computers or through Verizon’s FiOS TV system. FiOS is Verizon’s fiber optic communications service available in some areas of the United States.
Homeowners can save about $180 a year by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Verizon will debut the system at the Consumer Electronics Show Jan. 6-9, and expects to make it available to customers in early 2011.
In January Verizon will conduct a pilot program for Home Monitoring and Control in New Jersey. The homes selected for the program will be outfitted with an energy reader, smart appliance switches and thermostats, a smart power strip, smart door and window locks, motion sensors, an advanced pan-and-tilt camera and a fixed indoor and outdoor camera.
“What we'll be testing in these homes is just the beginning," said Eric Bruno, vice president of product management for Verizon. “We're giving customers a remote control for their homes that they can use to cut CO2 emissions and their energy bills and give them anytime, anywhere access and control of their homes.”
