Oceanfront home harvests the sun, shuts out the wind
Concrete windowsills and countertops, recycled rubber roof shingles and non-toxic products are just some of the sustainable features of this home. But the real star is its energy efficiency. The home has no central heating due to its tight envelope.

The home, which sits on a bluff 18 feet above the beach, utilized painted cement board siding for better insulation and decreased maintenance. The product carries a 25-year warranty. -
With such an incredible ocean view, the home relied on 12-inch thick insulated walls to guard against winter storms when the serene ocean turns angry. -
As the shadow line on the home indicates, protective overhangs help to keep the home cool in the hot summer months by shading the sun. -
The homeowners chose concrete countertops and window sills, not only for sustainable reasons but because they liked the architectural look. -
With sweeping ocean views, it was important to install triple glazed and highly insulated windows to protect from strong winds. -
Because of the home’s super tight envelope, the owners had to rely on this gas fireplace only two or three times last winter. -
Another backup heating source are these coil heat ceiling fans from Reiker that will heat a 20x20 foot room. They are located in every bedroom but are rarely used.
