AHR Review: 5 products that take home efficiency and comfort to new levels
At the 2016 AHR Expo, 60,000 industry professionals and nearly 2,000 exhibitors reviewed the latest and best products in the heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration industry.
Here's an overview of a few of the top products on the show floor, and ProudGreenHome.com will have extensive additional coverage of the trends and influence shaping HVAC as it relates to high performance homes.
Aeroseal duct sealing
HomeSeal from Aeroseal is an aerosol-based solution that works from the inside of ventilation shafts to “seek” and bond-seal targeted leaks, rather than coating the entire inside of the shaft withsealant. The technology, developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, EPA and others, works from inside the shaft to find and seal leaks. Aeroseal’s solution eliminates the need to disrupt or destroy current construction. This duct sealing technology has been employed to fix critical ventilation issues in numerous buildings and facilities, including hospitals and multi-story apartment buildings.
The new Bosch Hydronic Air Handlers create a more efficient, compact and advanced home heating system. By pairing the new air handler with Bosch Greentherm Condensing Tankless Water Heaters, homeowners can benefit from a more efficient heating system with a virtually endless supply of domestic hot water. The new air handler can replace furnaces with a ducted system, eliminating the need for a gas pipe, venting, and fresh air intake required for furnaces. It can also be used with 3-inch diameter high-velocity mini duct systems in retrofit applications, as well as in new construction. Combining both the Bosch Hydronic Air Handler and .95 EF-rated Greentherm Tankless Water Heaters results in an ultra-efficient heating and domestic hot water system.
The EcoSmart SmartBoost is an electric tankless booster for an electric tank water heater that boosts hot water capacity over 50 percent. Under the NAECA regulations, the only 80-gallon electric water heaters currently on the market are heat pump or hybrid water waters. While efficient, these units are physically larger than the previous 80-gallon tank models and may not fit in the same mechanical closet. Also, depending where the heat pump water heater is sited in a home, there may be an issue with the noise from the heat pump unit. Jens Bolleyer, vice president of marketing and retail sales at EcoSmart, said with the SmartBoost, a 50-gallon tank equipped with a SmartBoost can replace an 80-gallon tank electric water heater and supply the same amount of hot water to a home.
LG Multi V S
LG displayed the new Multi V S, the next generation of the Multi V Mini series, a compact outdoor mini split unit that can support up to nine individual indoor units. The Multi V S provides cooling or heating zoning capabilities and allows for individual control of room temperatures. The system utilizes single-phase power so it can be used in a wide range of building types, offering overall increased flexibility and efficiency. The Multi V S requires little or no ductwork, resulting in smaller space requirements for piping that preserves the integrity of the exterior of buildings. The system is compatible with LG's Art Cool Mirror, Art Cool Gallery, standard wall-mounted, vertical/horizontal air handlers and several other air handling models.
Symphony is a Wi-Fi based comfort platform that marries the Aurora controls of a WaterFurnace geothermal system with the company's WebLink router, which gives users access to the comfort system via the cloud. The system provides control over the entire geothermal system, not just the temperature as in other ‘smart thermostat’ systems. With the system, users can remotely control temperatures and programs in up to six areas of a home with the IntelliZone2 zoning system. Symphony is compatible with the WaterFurnace 3, 5 and 7 Series water-to-air geothermal products.
