Earth Advantage certifies more than 11,000 homes in Northwest

The Earth Advantage Institute was founded over 10 years ago as a branch of Portland General Electric to address energy conservation issues. In 2005, the group spun off from PGE to become a fully independent, non-profit green building resource.

To date, Earth Advantage has certified more than 11,000 homes and has played a key role in the conceptualization, promotion, and adoption of the Energy Performance Score (EPS), currently the only residential energy labeling system that enables buyers to directly compare home energy consumption.

Earth Advantage has its own certification program, similar to the USGBC LEED program, but more localized to the Northwest climate. Click here to view a sampleof Earth Certified homes, including a unique floating home.

Tom Breunig, communications director for Earth Advantage, says that while USGBC’s LEED for Homes is designed for builder’s experienced with green, his group represents a prime opportunity for builders who are just setting down the road to sustainability.
