Energy Star Home Delivers Lower Utility Bills

The owners of a new Energy Star certified home from KB Home, the 100,000th the company has built, noticed lower energy bills right away.

KB Home has participed in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR program for energy-efficient homes since 2000, an integral element to the company's eDIFFERENCE initiative. Today, every house that KB Home builds is ENERGY STAR certified. Recently KB Home reached a major milestone by building its 100,000th ENERGY STAR certified home for the Reyes family in Goodyear, Arizona.

The Reyes family, like many of the families that move into a KB home, were pleased to note that the utility bills for their new KB home were actually lower than their previous home, in spite of the fact that their KB home is considerably larger.

The Reyes family had been renting a 1,500-square foot apartment before they made the decision to purchase their new 2,300-square foot ENERGY STAR certified KB home.

“The savings were immediate,” said Jose Reyes. “We purchased a home that was close to 700 square feet larger so we expected our energy bills to rise. However, we were very surprised when the bill came and it was actually lower than what we had been paying when we were renting.”

The energy-efficient features in KB Home’s now more than 100,000 ENERGY STAR certified homes are estimated to have collectively saved more than $577 million in utility bills and have prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 335,000 passenger vehicles annually.

To celebrate the occasion, KB Home’s Phoenix division surprised the Reyes family, who recently purchased KB Home’s 100,000thENERGY STAR certified home at the homebuilder’s La Ventilla community in Goodyear, Arizona, with a check for $1,716.00.

This amount represents their home’s total annual savings based on their Energy Performance Guide (EPG). Similar to the MPG sticker on all new cars, the KB Home EPG is a proprietary innovation designed to educate homeowners and prospective buyers about the relative energy efficiency of a home and provide an estimated dollar amount for monthly energy costs.

Situated near I-10, Loop 101 and Loop 303 in Goodyear, AZ, KB Home’s La Ventilla community is ideal for residents who are commuting to downtown Phoenix and the area’s major employers. The floor plans at La Ventilla range from 1,483 to 2,537 square feet, with up to five bedrooms, three baths, and two-car garages. The KB homes at La Ventilla are also attractively priced from the mid-$100,000s, and the community features a pool.
