New Home Inspired by 19th Century Farmhouse

Perched atop a natural setting off Gulley and Wemrock Roads in Freehold Township, New Jersey, an Italianate colonial farmhouse, known as the Boude house (circa 1860), is embedded in the history of Monmouth County. Upon evaluation of the farm for development potential, builder Roger Mumford Homes recognized that the highly visible landmark was part of the fabric of the area and concluded that a plan to recreate the dilapidated farmhouse as part of a cluster development was preferable to replacing it with a contemporary home.

“We were sensitive to the prominence of the home as part of the view shed that people experience as they drive along Wemrock Road, and felt that designing a home to replicate the old home would be a treasure for generations to enjoy,” said Roger Mumford, President of Roger Mumford Homes.

This home will be developed on land that was once part of the Crossroads of the Revolution in Western Monmouth County – less than one mile from where the Battle of Monmouth (1778) was fought. The original Boude house was an “architectural jewel from a time gone by,” according to the Freehold Township Heritage Society (FTHS). “The Italianate farmhouse [featured] architectural details such as ornamental cornices with modillions, scroll brackets, saw tooth frieze moldings and segmental arch windows with pronounced cornices. The home [also retained] its original four-panel double door with a segmental arch transom light. The architectural character and details of this home [told] as much of a story as the people that have lived there over the past 150 years.”

“We were honored to be able to salvage parts of the Boude House before the restoration process began and appreciate the support of Roger Mumford Homes,” said Michael Berman, Vice President of the FTHS and member of the Freehold Township Historic Preservation Commission. “We secured decorative elements from the exterior and interior of the home that dated back to 1860 (i.e., doors, doorknobs, porch posts, windows, etc.) to be put on display at [nearby] Oakley farmhouse.”

The architecture for the new home will closely replicate the Boude house, according to Mumford. “As part of the effort, we will save the existing heritage trees located on the property, some of which are 4-5’ in diameter,” he added.

The new farmhouse is the genesis of Legend Hollow at Freehold, a new single-family home community by Roger Mumford Homes that will also include eight new homes. Construction at Legend Hollow Freehold is currently underway. “The roadwork was recently completed and construction of the model home is imminent” said Mumford. “Model homes are also available in a nearby location that can be toured by appointment.”

The community offers single-family home designs that range from 2,800 sq. ft. to over 3,800 sq. ft., and feature floor plans that are created for the way people really live today, including expansive great rooms, gourmet-inspired island kitchens, mud rooms and master bedroom foyers. A variety of personalization choices are available, as well as finished basements.

“We spend a great deal of time reviewing details for the homes at Legend Hollow Freehold,” added Mumford. “We select excellent features for our discerning buyers, and each of our homebuyers will collaborate with our Design Center team.”

Home sites for the estate-style homes are approximately three-quarter acres or larger, and the farmhouse will be situated on approximately three acres. Custom landscaping packages and shore colonial designs with classic exteriors create a welcoming streetscape.

Legend Hollow Freehold is convenient to shopping and entertainment at Freehold Raceway Mall and in downtown Freehold. CentraState Medical Center, a world-class healthcare facility, is only five minutes away. Outdoor recreation at parks and golf courses can also be found nearby, and commuters will enjoy easy access to Routes 9 and 33, I-195 and NJ Transit bus service.
