Will it be an early spring or six more weeks of winter? According to tradition, the length of winter could all come down to whether or not Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow on Groundhog Day, traditionally February 2.

If the celebrated Pennsylvania groundhog sees his shadow and returns to his hole, it means we are in store for six more weeks of winter. If Phil doesn’t see his shadow, break out the shorts and sunglasses for an early spring!

But, whether it is an early spring or a long winter, Phil (and the average person) can still enjoy the benefits of professionally installed window film no matter the season. If Phil sees his shadow, then you might want to join him in reducing glare and achieve savings on your energy bills by incorporating window film into your home.

The International Window Film Association (IWFA) recommends professionally installed window film as a cost-effective way to help control energy costs, provide safety benefits, and protect both skin and eyes from the potentially damaging UV rays of the sun.

Untreated windows only protect the eyes from about 25 percent of damaging UV rays. Continued exposure to UV light raises the risks of many issues for eyes, including cataracts. And since the damage is more cumulative than a homeowner hurting his or her eyes with flying debris or dust, most people do not take the necessary precautions against eye exposure to UV. Consumers and their family members rarely wear sunglasses inside, even when the sun is at its most glaring.

“While extremely thin and virtually invisible to the eye, window film provides powerful protection without altering the look of a home," said Darrell Smith, Executive Director of the IWFA. “Though it can be tinted in several shades, homeowners can also opt for a very clear film, which hardly alters the view at all.”

By blocking up to 99 percent of UV rays from passing through the windows of your car or home, window film can also help keep your skin healthy and more protected than window glass alone. So, no matter what Punxsutawney Phil sees when he leaves the safety of his burrow, he (and all of us) can celebrate the benefits of professionally installed window film this February.
