Palm trees don't like cold temperatures
Sometimes it is assumed that there would be not damage to a palm tree unless there is a hard frost, but in actuality palm trees can sustain chilling damage with temperatures in the 50’s. This type of injury occurs when the weather changes rapidly. Palms are often acclimated to evening temperatures in the 70’s but if a cold snap comes in with temperatures in the 40’s there will likely be damage to the foliage. A gradual change results in less damage. Chilling injuries can cause discoloration of leaves within two or three days after a cold snap.
There are many ways to protect your palm trees. Protect roots with mulch, but remove before the warm weather to prevent rot. Apply fertilizer in the early fall. Apply a copper- based fungicide before cold weather arrives to keep diseases such as bacterial leaf spot at bay.
An innovative solution is a palm tree heater developed by Electro Plastics, Inc. and HeatCon1. The palm tree’s trunk is wrapped with a STEP® Heating Element, a low-voltage (24V AC/DC), low temperature flat element made of PTC self-regulating semi-conductive polymers. The heater is protected by a bubble foil or other wrap, allowing the air to flow to prevent fungus growth. The wrap can even be decorated with lights. The heater and wrap should be removed when the weather warms.
