Save Big with A Heat Pump Water Heater

Sept. 29, 2017 | by Chad Sanborn

If you're in the market for a highly energy efficient electric water heater, take a look at the heat pump water heater, also known as a hybrid water heater.

This type of unit uses a built-in heat pump system to take heat from the surrounding air and transfers it to water in an enclosed tank. It basically uses free energy in the air to heat water most of the time, rather than using gas, oil, or electricity.

During periods of high hot water demand, HPWHs automatically switch to standard electric resistance heat (That's where the hybrid comes in). A heat pump water heater uses one-third to one-half as much electricity as a conventional electric resistance water heater. In warm climates they may do even better.

Heat pump water heaters are usually ENERGY STAR certified and may be eligible for state and local utility rebates and tax credits. Consult with your local plumbing contractor to find out if a heat pump water heater is right for your home.

Keep in mind these units require sufficient room air to support the heat pump operation. If you're upgrading from an electric tank water heater, check with your plumbing professional to see if the current location is adequate. Often electric water heaters are installed in a closet, which may not be large enough.

Beginning in early 2018, Bradford White Water Heaters will begin manufacturing heat pump water heaters at our factory in Middleville, Michigan. Bradford White acquired the production assets from the heat pump water heater operations of GE Appliances. We will produce 50- and 80-gallon AeroTherm™ Series products for an American-made choice for the U.S. marketplace.

Work with your plumbing professional to learn more about heat pump water heaters and how they contribute to energy efficiency for your home.
