Water absorbs more heat per weight than almost any other material on Earth

Ordinary water has extraordinary properties. It can absorb more heat per weight than almost any other material on earth. Put another way, it takes a lot of energy to increase the temperature of water, and as water decreases in temperature, it gives off a lot of energy. This property explains why a pool stays relatively cool on a hot day and also why heating water is typically one of the largest components of any energy bill despite only using hot water for a small part of the day compared to other activities like heating or cooling the house, and lighting it. Because of water’s ability to retain heat, typically only a small part of the heat energy is consumed in use, such as in a shower, and the rest is lost down the drain. This warm drain water is a source of untapped clean energy. It can be used to preheat incoming fresh water in order to cut the amount of energy consumed to heat water to a comfortable temperature.
