Family loves their high performance home remodel (photos)

A deep remodel of a two-story Bay Area home was successful thanks to the enthusiasm of the owners who had a vision for their new life.

Jeff King & Company, General Contractors in the Bay Area, worked with The Architect’s Office on the remodel of the two story home that has 2,570 square feet of living space, including a high-functioning central kitchen for cooking, entertaining and family time. New aluminum clad doors open the kitchen and dining room to a wrap-around deck for everyday indoor-outdoor living.

“The best part about this project is the enthusiasm of the homeowners,” Jeff King said.

“Contractors in the Bay Area are used to design-savvy clients, and this family went above and beyond. They were intimately involved in the design process and had a strong vision for their home, especially the bright colors. They even kept a weekly blog about the process.”

The second story pop-up provides the family’s son and daughter with their own play area, Jack and Jill bathroom and dual bedrooms. Now, the parents enjoy a private master suite on the ground floor and overlooking the garden.

Every room of the house features its own bright color scheme. Most notable is the canary yellow mudroom and laundry room, royal blue staircase and mustard yellow facade.

“We felt that including a lot of color would create fun, cozy, distinct spaces within the open floor plan,” says one of the homeowners. “Our architect, Steve Swearengen, was so thoughtful and inclusive and I became a little obsessed. In fact, I went through withdrawals when it was completed.”

The colorful kitchen includes green glass tile backsplash, painted grey cabinetry, soapstone countertops and an eat-in breakfast nook with teal bench seats. Jeff King & Company also installed dual ovens, a microwave drawer and built-in entertainment bar and wine cooler for convenient entertaining.

“We are thrilled with the spaces we have created," say the homeowners. "The kitchen and breakfast nook are the epicenter of the house, and we spend lots of family time there.”

Family dinners can easily move outdoors, too: the ipe wrap-around deck is stocked with a fully functional outdoor kitchen including grill, sink and soapstone countertops.

This whole house residential remodel includes hydronic radiant floor heating and solar PV panels. All general contractors (Bay Area or otherwise) are seeing more requests for sustainable building practices, and Jeff King & Company has developed an expertise in home performance systems.

Along with quality craftsmanship, the homeowners report that a spirit of collaboration makes for a successful project.

“Developing trust with your architects, designers and contractors is vital,” the homeowners reflect. “The core team was part of our family for quite a while and we could really count on them to have our best interests in mind.”
