Floor protection ensures indoor air quality for the Proud Green Home of St Louis

Because indoor air quality is one of the top goals of the Proud Green Home of St. Louis, the builder used a polyethylene wrap to protect the subfloor during construction.

The homeowners have placed a top priority on ensuring the home provides a healthy environment for their family, so Kim Hibbs, owner of Hibbs Homes, used KleenWrap from KleenDeck LLC to cover the floors in the home during construction.

The Proud Green Home of St. Louis was constructed to deliver sustainable benefits to its owners and to educate and inspire building professionals and consumers about the benefits of building and living green.

ProudGreenHome.com has partnered with Hibbs Homes, Verdatek Solutions, Curtiss W. Byrne Architect, and the High Performance Buildings Research Center, part of the Midwest Energy Efficiency Research Consortium at the University of Missouri-Columbia, to build the five-bedroom, 3,700 square-foot, Prairie-style home. Designed by architect Curtiss W. Byrne, the home in Wildwood, Missouri is expected to meet a number of prominent green building standards, including:

  • Energy Star for Homes
  • ANSI ICC-700 The National Green Building Standard
  • DOE Zero Net Ready home
  • EPA Indoor airPlus
  • WaterSense

The home will undergo third-party verification to ensure its performance and quality.

KleenWrap is a disposable floor protection product put in place when the subfloor is laid. As soon as the deck surface is complete or the concrete is cured, a builder can cover the entire surface with a KleenWrap disposable floor protection product. Then exterior and interior walls are constructed right on top of the KleenWrap which remains in place right up to the time the builder is ready to paint or to install finish flooring.

Because KleenWrap is 100 percent polyethylene, it can be taken up and recycled.

Exterior and interior walls can be built right on top of the material. When construction is complete and ready for painting or finish flooring, a utility knife is run along all walls and the KleenWrap is easily pulled up, leaving the subfloors cleaner than was ever possible before.

KleenWrap can be used to cover stairs, concrete floors in garages, and any concrete slab to protect them from the same construction site contamination that wood surfaces are subject to. Because the material breathes, concrete can continue to cure and moisture will not be trapped underneath it.
