A substantial amount of the energy used for clothes washing is for heating the water. This guide outlines requirements implemented for these appliances to be considered ENERGY STAR certified, which saves energy, water and money. ENERGY STAR washers:

    * Have a washer capacity of 1.6 cubic feet or more
    * Have a modified energy factor (MEF) of 1.80 or more
    * Have a water factor (WF) of 7.5 or less
