When used to heat a home, a heat pump delivers the energy used to run it in addition to whatever it can extract from the cool outdoors. While standard air source heat pumps are less effective in very cold climates and generally include electric heating elements for those times when they just can not handle the load, a ground-coupled heat pump addresses that issue.
