Reflective Roof Coatings

Publication Type:
Fact Sheet

Published / Updated:

Roofs have intense solar heat gain due to their relative flat exposure to the sun. The solar heat gain raises the temperature of the roof, which in turn increases the cooling load in the home and shortens the life of the roof. By placing a light colored coating called a cool-coating system, over the existing roof you can lower cooling costs and extend the life of the roof. Light colored roofs reflect some of the solar energy. Additionally, high-performance elastomeric white reflective coating systems contain UV-blocking pigment that helps keep heat away. Numerous studies confirm that reflective roof coatings can reduce surface temperature by 50-80 degrees. Download this fact sheet to learn more about reflective roof coatings.
